CS Stony Brook Email Problem Fixing Log
From NSAC @ Stony Brook
This log is intended to help our system administrators fix the many problems that arise in a busy environment such as the stony brook computer science department.
I abandon maintaining this log. There appears a problem virtually every 2-3 days and this log doesn't seem to have impacted that rate. It feels pretty hopeless. Oh well :(

Dear Colleague,
This is a call for participation to this year's Security and
Privacy Day, at Stony Brook on May the 30th. We are very excited
for the first time to have a *2-day* event, including (depending on

and Long Island vineyard tours. For more details please see
http://web.crypto.cs.sunysb.edu/spday/.
We are sending this message to remind you to register online
(free). If you plan on attending this, registration is REQUIRED and
enables us to make the appropriate reservations.
We apologize if you receive multiple copies of this message. We did
our best to avoid this. Please help us distribute this to other
interested colleagues.

Unable to read almost any file on the file system. Mail doesn't work. Intermittent SSH connection problems too.
24 April 2008:
All of the CS machines are down most of the time. The NFS server is down. The mail server is down. No files can be read or edited.
21 April 2008:
Machines inside the CS department are not reachable from the outside. Only the website seems to work, but no SSH or other types of access.

No mail gets in from the outside. Tested from 3 different domains including yahoo.com, gmail.com and moodys.com.
15 April 2008:
All mail machines are down for the past 12 hours. Update: now logging in is possible into compserv but no home directories mount.

Mail reading/writing is tremendously slow. E.g., opening the mail folder takes 3-4 minutes. Opening an editor on compserv takes over 45-60 seconds.
8 April 2008:
Even the email to the systems staff gets returned !!!

Hopefully this was a one-off glitch, but one of my emails to you last
Sunday was refused. Ingrid at Nokia replied to it and included the
original message in her reply so I think you saw it anyway and I won't
resend. Just wanted to let you know in case this is something you
need to alert your sysadmin about.
Cheers,

Not missing. Undelivered. I'll have to see if she got an error.
There was some connectivity issue with the notes mailer. We started
getting unexpected close on connection errors from about 1:50 pm
until 4pm after that everything became normal.

Problem apparently is with the remote site:
The logs say that wp.pl is giving a temp service error. It could easily be that our dept or SB is on a RBL because some labs have recently been spamming other places on the internet.

Email bounces because DNS lookups do not work properly from inside CS :( Note that looking up the same address from any machine outside CS works just fine. Sending to the same address from an yahoo email account 2 minutes later worked just fine:

Actually, you got the email right away (look in your mailbox).
The logging area filled up and generated that message ....
I rotate these logs automatically now so it will not re-occur.

19 November 2007:
After an absence of a few months with only minor observed problems (dead server for a few hours and such), we are back: my student is unable to receive emails (but this turned out to be a problem of stony brook, not CS), but, more importantly, emails sent from the outside get lost. Specifics have been forwarded to wreq@cs.
27 March 2007:
Symptoms: Emails are not accepted by the stony brook mail server. Collaborator at NOKIA could not get in touch with me for 1 month.

13 March 2007:
Symptoms: CS Web Server is Down and very slow.
Pages take tens of seconds to load and often time out.
10-12 March 2007:
Symptoms: Any of the compservXXX machines are down every 30 mins or so.
Very difficult to work while they continuously keep crashing with no warning. Logging into another compservYYY machine works for another 30-45 mins. etc. Why can't we have a machine run reliably for more than a few minutes ? Or at least get a warning from root when they are shutdown.
2-4 March 2007:
Symptoms: CS Web Server is Down.
This happens roughly every other week. I am unable to edit my course page or upload course notes.
Week of 17-24 February 2007:
Symptoms: mail server does not accept emails from pine, long delays
Likely cause: mail server is either dead, in a bad state or miss-configured
Update: Likely cause is the inability to save attachements !!!
